Dental Crown

Crowns are synthetic teeth-like coverings that are designed to make your tooth stronger and improve its appearance. A crown is a strong restoration that covers, or "caps," a tooth to restore it to its normal shape and size, strengthening and improving the appearance of a tooth.

Types of dental crowns, we can offer to our patients:
  • Full porcelain
  • Full cast metal
  • Semi-precious metal
  • Gold
  • Lava
  • Zirconia
  • Implant crown

Before a crown is placed, all of the diseased or fractured parts of the tooth are removed. Sometimes it is necessary to place a build-up or post on the tooth to replace severely broken down or missing areas prior to the placement of the crown. Once the crown is cemented into place, it restores the original form and function of the natural dentition.

  • Sometimes with an older crown, a dark line may be noticed at the gum-line. This is usually the underlying metal substructure that shows due to the receding of the gums. Modern materials, however make this a thing of the past.
  • All-ceramic crowns are the most cosmetic. These crowns have a strong inner core of porcelain that is colored with life-like esthetic porcelain. These restorations are generally used in the front part of the mouth where the stresses of the bite are less.
  • The advantage of these crowns is their natural appearance and since there is no metal under the surface porcelain, they do not show that dark line often seen as the gums recede.
