Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve of a tooth is affected by decay or infected. In order to save the tooth, the pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth), nerves, bacteria, and any decay are removed and the resulting space is filled with medicated dental materials, which restore the tooth to its full function.
Performing a root canal is the treatment of choice in order to prevent deterioration and removal of the tooth. Many patients believe that removing the tooth is the solution, but what is not realized is that extracting the tooth will ultimately be more costly and cause significant problems for the adjacent teeth.
Root canal treatments are highly successful and usually last a lifetime, although on occasion, a tooth will have to be retreated due to a new infection.
Depending on the number of teeth and severity affected, root canals usually require one to two visits not including any follow-up visits. Your dentist or Endodontist will numb the area around the affected tooth, or may offer you the option of mild sedation. A rubber dental dam is placed and the tooth is then drilled to the pulp area either through the top or the back of the tooth. The actual root canals are measured after some of the pulp has been removed. This is done so that the dentist can clean the entire canal, and so that enough of the filling material will be used to completely fill the canal. The actual measuring is done with either x-rays or electronic imaging devices.
All of the diseased pulp in the tooth is removed, and the canal is cleaned out thoroughly with an antiseptic solution. This solution will clean all of the canals within the tooth. The canals are then filled with gutta percha, a flexible plastic material. A temporary filling is then put on top of that. A crown or permanent filling will be done after there has been no sign of infection. Crowns are most common since the root canal procedure weakens the tooth. The crown is usually placed as soon as possible, within a month or less.
Expect two to three days of soreness after the procedure, or longer if the infection in the root canal was severe.

I really liked the new tool he used to clean my clean. I remember during past cleanings that I would come home and my mouth and gums would be very sore. This time, everything was great and my teeth looked and felt great. Thanks for so many years of dental health support to me and my family!
Dr. Supczenski is very pleasant, professional and proficient. His office is clean and simple and his staff is very pleasant and professional.
Absolute best dentist my family has ever had
I have four kids, one was extremely fearful of dentists. We found dr. Supczenski and we all love him. I can't recommend him highly enough. My parents now also use him and they too are so impressed with his gentleness and his honesty. In the past, we used a pediatric dentist for the kids and it felt so impersonal. this dentist is worlds better. Dr. Supczenski is smart, gentle, honest and has a very warm, friendly staff. I couldn't be happier.
My son Tyler was a patient of Dentistry of Westtown where he had a general cleaning, checkup and then later 6 cavities filled. The office was extremely professional, well informed and exceptionally nice! The doctor was outstanding but most importantly, Nancy was overall the best staff member. Nancy was always kind, professional, and went over and beyond the call of duty. I appreciate Nancy's help and would recommend anyone in the West Chester area to use this dental practice.
Excellent Office and Staff
Dr. John was recommended to me by a coworker, I had not been to the dentist in several years so I was very nervous about what he would find. The hygienist, dental assistant, and doctor were great! I especially liked how Dr. Supczenski reviewed each step I should take in the coming months to address the problems he discovered. Nanci was extremely friendly and helpful, I had to schedule a new appointment to have a cavity filled and she calculated how much my insurance would cover and how much I would owe out of pocket. My first series of visits was a year ago and I've been back twice for maintenance since. Clean, high tech facility and my appointment was on time.
As someone who has an awful fear of dentists, I went to my appointment with great trepidation. Dr. Supczenski was immediately very kind and responsive to my fears. I have had root canal and crowns without pain, but mostly in a relaxed atmosphere, because Dr.Supczenski checks with you to see if you are ok or need a break. If I call for an emergency appointment, I am given one immediately. The office and staff are also very friendly and the office is immaculate and very clean! Most of all, I wish to reiterate, that Dr. Supczenski is a wonderful dentist, whose chair side manner will make your appointment 'relaxing'! I highly recommend Dr. Supczenski and his practice to all.
Wonderful experience on my cleaning visit. Dr. provided me with a personal attention and answered all of my dental questions
A long time patient! Wouldn't want to be anywhere else!
The staff is the friendliest group of people! They really care about you and remember each and every patient! Always treated with the greatest respect and I leave happy each and every time!
Great job as always
